Walking holidays in Greece

Walking in Greece

Generation after generation have walked a path across the Greek countryside and, although they would not have known it, they were blazing trails for the tourists of today.

Countryside paths now form a marvellous mosaic of routes across mainland Greece and her islands so walkers to get off the beaten track and experience the peaceful magic of a country bursting with picturesque delights.

Whether you want to stroll to a deserted bay, stretch your legs in scenic olive groves and forests or test yourself on a challenging mountain climb you can find the right path.

The number of walkers choosing Greece for a holiday is going up as ancient trails are repaired and more walking guides become available.

Corfu

Corfu has the Corfu Trail stretching the length of the island that was the venue for the hit TV series The Durrells. The trail goes through olive groves, villages, lovely beaches – and numerous resorts used by Olympic Holiday. Recently built St George Palace is in a tranquil olive grove in peaceful Saint George’s North.

Tilos

Tilos and Paxos are tiny islands but both are criss-crossed by ancient walking trails. A coastal path runs alongside the lovely white buildings of Ilidi Rock Apartments in Tilos. The Paxos Club Resort near Ghia has a swimming pool, sauna and massage room where you can relax after your walk.

Crete

Crete’s main hike is spectacular Samaria Gorge which snakes for 16 km between mountains to the sea. Try the recently built Santa Marino Plaza at Agia Marina, a luxurious five-star treat for adults, or two-star Calypso Hotel just a few minutes from Chania’s picturesque Venetian harbour.

Halkidiki

Walking is a great way to get a different perspective on mainland Greece too. For instance, Halkidiki, renowned for amazing beaches, has hiking trails with breath-taking views of the stunning coastline and countryside.

Peloponnese

The Peloponnese has a vast range of walking opportunities, including the Viros Gorge near Kardamyli, ancient mule trails around the Taggeto Mountain villages and easier paths at Gialovoa’s bird sanctuary lagoon and stunning Voidokilia bay. Kalamata, Stoupa and Costa Navarino are well-placed for exploring.
