f you’re looking for a travel experience that blends history, culture, and awe-inspiring sights, Krakow is a must-see destination! I had the privilege of visiting this incredible city and exploring some of its most moving and iconic landmarks with my mum & sister and thought I’d share it with you!
Top tips:
If you are staying near the town square take the train from the airport. They run every 30 mins and it is a 7 minute walk from the station to the square – £3.50 o/w
Taxi from/to the airport. Plenty of taxis at the airport and there is a taxi rank just off the town square. (You can book locally and communicate via Whatsapp with the taxi office.) £30 Or we can book your private airport transfer- a car will be waiting for you
You can take a train to the salt mines and pay on arrival, you don’t have to pre book…unless you want a tour from your hotel which we can pre book
If you need disabled access via the lift you MUST book as there is only one tour a day for the less mobile. 800 steps down into the mine.
Auschwitz: You MUST pre book tours. When we went the tours were completely full and a 7 hour wait for tickets if you made your own way there.
Take a golf buggy tour of all 3 areas. The old town, Jewish quarter & ghetto. Approx £100 2.5 hours guided tour…fabulous!
Try the traditional polish restaurants, great food and great value. I have shared a picture below of the one we went to. Delicious!
A large beer on the square approx £4
Evening meal approx £20
There isn’t a huge choice for vegans but we found several places while wandering round. Most restaurants have a couple of veggie dishes, but will adapt meat dishes to suit if you ask.
Listen for the bugler who plays on the hour every hour from the town cathedral. A tradition dating back to 1241!
Krakow is a city of breathtaking beauty and rich history. From the stunning Main Market Square to the enchanting streets of the Old Town, every corner of this city tells a story. Visit the magnificent Wawel Castle and Kazimierz, the Jewish Quarter, which is steeped in history.
Auschwitz-Birkenau – A deeply poignant experience that is essential for anyone wishing to understand the human cost of war. Walking through the gates of this notorious site is humbling, and the guided tour brings a sobering yet important perspective on the Holocaust. It’s a powerful reminder of resilience, remembrance, and the importance of peace.
Wieliczka Salt Mines – A true hidden gem! Just outside Krakow, this UNESCO World Heritage site takes you deep underground, where centuries-old salt chambers, sculptures, and even a cathedral carved from salt await. It’s an astonishing, otherworldly experience—perfect for those looking for something unique and off the beaten path.
